Aquacomms

Aquacomms is a series of speculative paintings exploring biodiverse relating to physical internet infrastructures.

Spider web of intricate relationships (Telaraña de relaciones intrincadas)

2022, Acylic on canvas (Acrílico sobre lienzo), 31 x 50”

Simulating a family portrait, animalistic cables with discrete personalities collectively lay in a landscape of change and ambiental disruption.

Portrait of a species in transition (Retrato de una especie en transición)

2021, Oil on canvas (Óleo sobre lienzo), 56 x 64 in.

Lettuce algae has taken the white plastic coating of cables, protecting it from external conditions. This speculative subject responds to lettuce algae observed in large quantities on the shores during 2021, imagined overtime growing around/with/into internet subaquatic cables.

Close encounter with cyber algae (Contacto estrecho con cyber alga)

2021, Acrylic on canvas (Acrílico sobre lienzo), 14 x 18.25”

Over time material networks change the species, places and conditions of the spaces in which they lay. Metal, plastic, and glass from cables, antennas, and subterranean tunnels intricately interlacing through the landscape. Over time, these grow to exemplify the biodiverse forms of relating, growth, and interconnected change.

This series was developed through 2020-2022 as I led a mutual aid group in partnership with NYC Mesh and Mil Mundos en Común to provide free at-home internet connectivity to neighbors in Bushwick.
